Sotheby's Hong Kong presents a superb 8.41-Carat Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond

HONG KONG.- Sotheby’s Hong Kong presents a 8.41-Carat Pear-shape Internally Flawless (IF) Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond (Est. HK$100 - 120 million / US$12.8 – 15.4 million*) as part of the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Autumn Sale 2014 scheduled to take place on 7 October at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Arguably the most desirable pink diamond to appear at auction in recent years, this beautiful 8.41-carat stone was cut from a 19.54-carat rough mined by the world’s leading diamond corporation De Beers, with the final cutting completed in New York.

Internally Flawless clarity, as seen in this remarkable 8.41-carat stone, is extremely rare in pink diamonds, and virtually unseen in any significant pink diamond of Fancy Vivid or Fancy Intense colour grading ever sold at auction.

This stunning 8.41-Carat Purple-Pink Diamond, possessing not only “Fancy Vivid” colour - the highest colour grading by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) signifying the most vibrant and concentrated colour in diamonds - but also Internally Flawless clarity, ranks amongst the rarest and most desirable of coloured diamonds ever seen at auction.

The stone will be previewed in Singapore, Taipei, New York, London, Geneva and Hong Kong before the auction. QUEK Chin Yeow, Deputy Chairman, Asia, and Chairman International Jewellery, Asia, said, “Sotheby’s has had the honour to bring to the auction market a number of truly remarkable coloured diamonds.

Following the Graff Pink, current world record holder for a diamond and any jewel at auction, we are privileged to present a superb 8.41- Carat Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond this October in Hong Kong – one of the world’s three major jewellery auction centres after Geneva and New York. This colour is one of the most beautiful and concentrated shades of pink in diamonds that I have seen and, combined with the exceptional clarity, it is not surprising that it would command the highest per-carat pre-sale estimate for any pink diamond to date.

With this exquisite pink diamond we continue Sotheby’s tradition of bringing some of the rarest and most extraordinary objects to market.” Natural Coloured Diamonds Natural coloured diamonds are mysterious gems of perfection born out of wonderful imperfection in nature.

Owing their fascinating hues to additional trace elements or distortions to the typical diamond structure, coloured diamonds are unique and far rarer than colourless diamonds.

Pink, one of the rarest and most desired colour in diamonds, is known to be the result of crystal deformation in the diamond lattice.

Captivating Colour Among the 4C’s of diamond valuation – Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut, colour is of paramount importance and prevails over other criteria in the valuation of coloured diamonds. Of all the existing grades of colour, “Fancy Vivid”, as manifested by this beautiful 8.41-carat stone, is the highest possible for a coloured diamond.

The modifying colour of purple is one of the most commonly seen in pink diamonds, and often results in the most charming and vibrant feminine hue that is the dream of many.

The present stone, combining Fancy Vivid purple-pink colour and extremely rare Internally Flawless (IF) clarity, is indeed a treasure of nature.

Pink Diamonds in History Ever since they were first discovered in the mines of India centuries ago, pink diamonds have been coveted by rulers and prized by connoisseurs.

Many of the great gems of history happen to be pink diamonds, including the Williamson presented to Queen Elizabeth II at her wedding, the Hortense from the Crown Jewels of France, the Darya-i-Nur from the Iranian Crown Jewels, the Agra documented as having belonged to Babur, founder of the Mogul Empire, and the Graff Pink which set the world auction record for a diamond and any jewel when purchased by Lawrence Graff at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2010. Pink Diamonds at Auction

The current record price ever paid at auction for a diamond, or any gemstone, is the Graff Pink, a superb 24.76-carat, Fancy Intense pink diamond, purchased by Lawrence Graff at Sotheby’s Geneva in November 2010 for CHF45,442,500 / US$46,158,674 / HK$360,307,657 (US$1,862,739 per carat).

The current record price per carat for a Fancy Vivid pink diamond (US$2,155,332 per carat) was set by a 5.00-carat diamond, sold in Hong Kong in January 2009 for HK$83,540,000 / US$10,776,660.

"This store has a very pleasant environment and Jeff and Janet are both kind, wonderful people. I used Jeff a few times for appraisals and he was very thorough and was happy to answer lots of questions. He uses scientific methods and tests rather than going solely by appearance as some jewelers will try to do, and his expertise is well respected. On one occasion, he even went out of his way to help expedite a deal for me. He has my highest recommendation. Suzanne T., San Rafael, CA

“Jeff is an incredible gemologist who knows everything there is to know about gem stones. He is a true professional and can be trusted. The quality of their work is impeccible and always consistent. “Janet and Jeff designed and crafted our wedding rings and did a great job. They worked with existing diamonds we had in an antique ruby cocktail ring, added the sapphire stone and made a beautiful pendant with the ruby. In addition, they designed earrings for our daughters. All are still in great shape today. They are easy to work with and very reliable and trustworthy.” Peg M., San Anselmo
